A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
