Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
