The Golden State is Completely Free of Drought for the First Time in a Quarter Century.

Following 25 long years, every region of the state is experiencing water scarcity. This landmark event follows difficult years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated fire dangers and challenged its enormous farming industry.

A Map Reveals Zero Drought

A recent update from the national drought tracker confirmed that all of California is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This development resulted from multiple heavy precipitation that helped fill key lakes like Oroville and Shasta well above their typical levels.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve only known in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” noted a weather expert.

From Intense Storms to Rainy Seasons

The path to this point featured powerful and fatal winter storms that struck the state in the not-too-distant past, causing widespread flooding, blackouts, and tragic losses. Even though those events began to alleviate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

As late as late December, pockets like northeastern California were considered abnormally dry. Substantial precipitation at the start of the new year washed away those last vestiges of dryness.

The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern

However, hydrologists note that the end of drought status is not the same as complete water security. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation place it at roughly seven-tenths of the historical norm.

This frozen reservoir, which supplies a significant portion of the state's water as it thaws later in the year, is a critical factor for future water availability. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is too early to make predictions for the months ahead.

“The current pattern right now is more rain than snow,” commented a hydrology section chief. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to improve by April 1st so that we’re nearer to normal.”

While the drought map shows a clean slate, attention turns to maintaining this precious water balance during the months to come.
