The nation's security cabinet has voted to recognize the formalization of nineteen fresh settlements in the contested West Bank, signaling a ongoing campaign for settlement expansion.

Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a settler who advocated for the move alongside Defense Chief Israel Katz, stated that the approval was about blocking the formation of a Palestinian state.

It is important to note that Jewish communities in the disputed territories are deemed in violation of international law.

The announcement has sparked criticism from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has commented that Israel's "unceasing" growth of communities fuels tensions, limits Palestinian access to land, and jeopardizes the feasibility of a independent Palestinian state.

Escalating Unrest and Political Fallout

Violence in the occupied West Bank has escalated since the conflict in the Gaza Strip started in October 2023, adding to apprehensions that settlement expansion could solidify the Israeli presence and damage the possibility for a two-state solution.

The concept of two states envisions the creation of a Palestinian state in the Palestinian territories, with East Jerusalem as its capital, roughly along the borders that existed before the 1967 Middle East war.

Upon assuming leadership in 2022, the current Israeli government has greatly accelerated the authorization of new settlements and begun the legalisation process for informal outposts, recognising them as "suburbs" of existing communities.

Ongoing Growth

The most recent approval brings the cumulative figure of settlements approved over the preceding 36 months to 69, as stated by Minister Smotrich.

These decisions come a short time after the United Nations stated that settlement expansion had reached its highest level since 2017.

The most recent round of approvals includes the revival of two communities — Ganim and Kadim — which were evacuated about 20 years ago.

Earlier this year, Israel approved twenty-two new communities in the territories - described as the most significant wave of approvals in decades.

Additionally, the government sanctioned projects in August to construct more than three thousand residences in the so-called E1 area between Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim settlement, a project that had been frozen for many years amid fierce foreign opposition.

At that time, Smotrich said it would "bury the notion of a Palestinian state."

Population Realities and International Response

Roughly 700,000 settlers reside in approximately 160 communities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as per data from the Israeli monitoring organization Peace Now. This is land that Palestinians envision for a prospective sovereign nation.

This ongoing construction has drawn ire from neighboring countries who have consistently said it erodes chances for a peaceful two-state outcome.

It has also fueled fears about the potential incorporation of the occupied West Bank.

Former American President Donald Trump had once cautioned the Israeli leadership about annexation, stating to TIME magazine that the country would lose its backing from the US if it occurred.

In a diplomatic shift, the UK - along with other nations including Australia and Canada - formally recognized a State of Palestine, a notable although primarily ceremonial shift in foreign policy.

Israel was against this step, with PM Benjamin Netanyahu asserting that a Palestinian state "will not happen."
